Those who have visited our apartment know we live right next to busy train tracks. Recently, there has been some work done on the rails. We guessed the work would mean quieter tracks and less rumble as the trains go by, since usually when work gets done, it’s to straighten and tighten the tracks. Our apartment has never rumbled as much as it has since that work has been done!!

A BBC show, Whistleblower, confirmed my concerns about the safety of the trains across the country. Three journalists became undercover rail workers, and their discoveries were nothing less than alarming. The employees were careless when working, disregarding basic safety common sense, let alone Network Rail regulations. All in all, taking the train doesn’t feel very safe anymore.

Train CrashAs if trains weren’t in the spotlight enough after this show, last night, six people died and five more were severely injured in a train crash between London and Plymouth. A car remained on the tracks at a railroad crossing and the train hit it at full speed, causing all eight carriages to leave the tracks. So in this case, it isn’t related to track safety as they uncovered in the show, we can only really blame the driver of the car who was on the tracks for the derailment.

Walking and driving suddenly feels like a pretty good idea…
