Just my thoughts of the evening… Ani DiFranco is still great to listen to, I think I even appreciate her songs more now than before. Let’s not discuss the newest albums which have aren’t quite on the same path as her older stuff but much respect to her.

Because my level of cohesiveness (is that even a word?) is about as limited as one of a lemon at a funeral at the moment, I’ll just post the lyrics to one of the poems of hers I’ve never forgotten…

    my i.q.

when i was four years old, they tried to test my i.q.
they showed me a picture of 3 oranges and a pear
they said, which one is different and does not belong?
they taught me different is wrong
but when i was 13 years old, i woke up one morning
thighs covered in blood, like a war, like a warning
that i live in a breakable takeable body
    an ever increasingly valuable body
that a woman had come in the night to replace me
    deface me
see, my body is borrowed, yeah, i got it on loan
for the time in between my mom and some maggots
i don’t need anyone to hold me, i can hold my own
i got highways for stretchmarks to see where i’ve grown
i sing sometimes like my life is at stake
’cause you’re only as loud as the noises you make
i’m learning to laugh as hard as i can listen
    ’cause silence is violence
    in women and poor people
if more people were screaming then i could relax
but a good brain ain’t diddley
if you don’t have the facts, we live in a breakable takeable world
    an ever available possible world
    and we can make music
    like we can make do
genius is in a back beat
backseat to nothing if you’re dancing
    especially something stupid like i.q.
for every lie i unlearn i learn something new
i sing sometimes for the war that i fight
’cause every tool is a weapon – if you hold it right.

danah dot org had lyrics to all her songs if I remember right…

Oh and… cheers to uni being over… ya know, minor landmark in my life… that would explain drinking at home and ordering pizza by myself while all my friends went home to pass out n sleep… *shrugs*

  • Thanks for the memories

Hard to believe I survived to an entire university program.

One more day of class and four exams left and I’ll be done for good. That’s three years sitting in cold dingy classrooms listening to some prof go on about god knows what theory of media, or working my ass off on team projects with sometimes good, sometimes bad, teammates, trying to make it in time for the deadline. It’s three years of presenting in front of the class pretending to be some media company trying to sell you the best marketing campaign there is. Three years of falling asleep while copying class notes and waking up with red marks on my cheek from sleeping on my watch…

I guess in a way I’ll miss university… I guess it wasn’t the typical big-social-life uni experience but when have I ever been a big social bumblebee, really? They say you can have two things out of three in uni; good grades, a job, or a social life. I got the first two and kind of forgot about the third, didn’t I? Ah well, I guess I’ll just have to make up for that once I get to England!

Talking about England… That’s coming up terribly soon! In a few days, it’s the family wedding shower, in a week, the hen night out with friends, a week later, I’m moving out (!!!!!!!), and the week after I’m flying out! (!!!!!!!! x 10000! 🙂 ) It’s been flying by, and I’m sure the next few weeks will go by just the same way!

So many things to do, so little time left to see everyone and do everything I want before I leave. They’ll be some busy last few weeks! *scribbles some more in her agenda*

Ahhh can’t wait to be done n dusted with this, sitting in a pub*, having a beer, and planning on bimbling over to Star of India for a curry 🙂

    *happy sigh*

    * A pub? – ahh yes. A meeting place where people attempt to achieve advanced states of mental incompetence, by the repeated consumption of fermented vegetable drinks.

  • There.com

So… having an unproductive evening anyways, I decided to have a look at There.com, a 3d chat environment. It reminded me strangely of The Palace, which I used in 1993 or so… but even lamer… It even beat the Sims Online as far as lameness goes.

Sociologists would have a ball analysing that environment and the interactions… I “bought” a shirt and pants using Theredollars or whatever they call their money, and walked around a bit. I asked a few ppl how you could get money, either by winning it or working for it or something. Turns out they had all put *real* money into it to “start themselves up” and “get a look going”… Why oh WHY???

Everyone looks great, I had perfect hair and a perfectly slim bootay in the game, and so did everyone else… But I was thinking what a waste of time and money that was… Girls are in perma-flirty position and boys have perfect white smiles, no wonder some ppl with less than perfect real lives enjoy living in that world!

Granted it’s an interesting experiment, I don’t think I’ll go back in there. It’s just too odd for my liking… I much prefer talking to people in real life… or at least talking to people I know!

… I did have nice abs in there though!
