  • It doesn't get any better than this

On a passing visit to London yesterday, I came across Art. Not a Monet, not a Warhol, and certainly not a Da Vinci. But I did see a Banksy with mine own little eyeballs! Somewhere between Kings Cross and Exmouth Market, we were greeted by it. (Click on the image for the full picture of the little girl at the ATM)

Banksy ATM artHe redecorated an old bricked up window with an ATM and a little girl. Without opening up the art vs vandalism issue again, I can’t help but feel thought-out social commentary graffitis are as welcome in the city as its own inhabitants. Banksy makes a point with his art, which is why I have more respect for a guerrilla artist who’s effectively building a brand for himself while making us think, rather than the cheap taggers who seem to have the London to Cambridge train line covered, repeatedly scribbling their name illegibly in spray paint.

I know his art hasn’t been appreciated everywhere, but in busy London, it just fits in. It’s part of the story.

  • More Banksy love

Paris The Dog HiltonFinally it took a few days to get my mitts on some pictures of the Paris Hilton albums Banksy doctored up, but here they are.

  • Note to self: cooking chilli

Always make homemade chilli to coincide with Andrew being away the following day and evening, or at the very least, ensure to spend as much time as possible in open air spaces to avoid overdose of toxic gases.

    No joke, I nearly died.

  • The Crocodile Hunter is dead

Steve IrwinI read it on WWTDD, then confirmed it on BBC News and it’s true. Steve Irwin, who was internationally known for his close interactions with dangerous animals and for his work to protect the Australian wildlife, was killed by a sting ray barb to the chest while filming a documentary in Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef.

One can only assume he died doing what he loved, and there’s no doubt he’ll be remembered for his stunts as much as his documentaries. He probably was the one to put Australia on the map for many North Americans. The stuff of legends.

  • Paris Hilton vs Banksy

I’ve professed my love for Banksy once before, but now I REALLY lurve him for his latest stunt.

“Hundreds of Paris Hilton albums have been tampered with in the latest stunt by “guerrilla artist” Banksy.

Banksy has replaced Hilton’s CD with his own remixes and given them titles such as Why am I Famous?, What Have I Done? and What Am I For? He has also changed pictures of her on the CD sleeve to show the US socialite topless and with a dog’s head.”

Paris Hilton, the pathetic socialiteParis is already nerve-grating without opening her mouth, but for her to release an album is just an insult to real music. We can only thank Banksy for kindly replacing the CDs with a healthier alternative.

Even in the case of talented or famous artists, I wish they’d stick to their field of expertise, rather than all try their hand at acting, singing and politics. However, in the case of Paris, she’s not talented and there’s no justification for her to be famous. She’s just noise. And so are her songs. Cringetastic cheesy pop crap.

“Okok Give Paris A Break This Isnt The Worse Album Like Ever So Im Going To Give Her Four Stars… Haha Why? To Annoy All You People Who Hate Her Cos Tho It May Only Deserve 3 Stars… Im Gna Bak Her Cos God Its Sumin New Aint It”, says one of her most articulate fans in an iTunes review. Must be the blonde bleach getting to their brains.

Banksy, not a bad job eradicating a few albums, but can’t you just make her disappear altogether? The Omni team and I would all be pleased. Plskthx.

  • Some Americans are completely bonkers

A year ago, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. A man, credited with having rescued 200 people immediately after the flood, is now being sued for his quick action and heroic act. Why? Because he nicked an idle boat to go help these people.

“The owner of that boat is now suing Morice for using the craft to save fellow citizens’ lives “without receiving permission,” and claims “grief, mental anguish, embarrassment and suffering . . . due to the removal of the boat.” It seems no good deed goes un-sued,” says Boing Boing today.

Maybe I’ve got it all wrong, but I don’t believe anyone would be mad enough to sue over something like this anywhere else in the world. This man stole a boat out of desperation to help others, not because he fancied going boat-joyriding around the lake. Even if he’d only saved only one person, even a cat or a dog, he’d still have done it for the good of others!

The Times Picayune newspaper sheds a bit more light on why Lyons, the boat owner, decided to sue, claiming he believed Morice acted as he did only to promote his law practice. He also claims Morice should have at least left a note and returned the boat after use. Well, geez, next time there’s a life-threatening hurricane, we’ll all make sure we bring pen and paper along.

  • Chavelocity

Chav carIt’s old news by now, but still makes me laugh. Chavelocity is the place to get your dole-friendly hooded tracksuits from just £9.99. It’s also the best place to book a holiday to Ally Canty or Grease, so get your Solo cards out and start booking a trip for you and your Britneys.

Thankfully, Travelocity proved they have a bit of a sense of humour and did not attempt to slap an ASBO on the poor sods who created the parody.

  • Del.icio.us replaces the shoutbox

Small but lovely change made to the sidebar, you can now see my del.icio.us links.

I pondered getting rid of the shoutbox and mentioned it to Andrew before going off to the pub on Friday lunch, and when I came back, he’d already done it! Damn genius, that boy! 😉
