  • The programmers' Java Cookies

The hungry programmer has the option to either learn to make this recipe or to work with me.

Because I’m nice. And I make cookies for my team. Sometimes, anyways… Maybe Thursday if they’re good boys (and girls).

PS – find the three errors for me, I couldn’t write a line of code to save my life, let alone spot the errors the author points out at the bottom of the post!

  • James Blunt tops US music Billboard

So it’s happened again. British music manages to sneak its way up the US Billboard, and it turns out to be complete and utter shit music.

Why can’t it be something better? I mean, I’m not a fan of much of what plays on the radio, but if anything, ship the Arctic Monkeys, KT Tunstall or even (*shudder*) Coldplay over! Anything even vaguely decent has to be better than Mr. Valium himself, James “I once was a soldier but am now a pothead” Blunt.

A quote from a BBC News article sums up only too well why the US have taken a fancy to James Blunt; “Americans like Brits when they are the musical equivalent of Hugh Grant,” says Mr Needham. “Sensitive, slightly bumbling and a bit posh.”

I’m siding with Chris Moyles in saying James Blunt’s cd isn’t even worthy of becoming a coaster for my coffee mug (ok, he didn’t say it in those words, but he doesn’t think too highly of the man’s music) but please allow me to present you with an alternative version of the song. Much much better!

  • Nokia N70 – My new gadget!

I’ve had the same old phone for a couple of years, the Nokia 6100, a simple but sort of featureless little phone. It did me well, but I desperately wanted a camera phone as a way to spice this blog up a bit (and to quiet my mom down about not sending enough photos home πŸ˜‰ ).

So I treated myself to a Nokia N70 (warning, god awful minisite, just go look at the specs), as it had the 2 megapixels camera I wanted and plenty of funky features like Symbian OS, mp3 ringtones and an easy-access upgradable memory card.

Vero on SundayI haven’t had a huge amount of time (or sunlight) to try the camera in different lighting conditions but so far so good. It does video as well, but I can’t imagine that’ll come out too well!

Otherwise, it’s also got a highly addictive version of Snakes. Ok, I know most people don’t care, but I’m easily entertained, especially when sitting on the bus to work when it’s either playing mini-games or watching miserable people fall asleep.

At this point in time, the N70 comes highly recommended if anyone’s looking for a new phone! More photos on the way!

  • Why Lego rocks

TechEBlog presents the top 10 strangest Lego creations. I suspect my dad would love the Lego harpsichord, but the Pinball machine is the one that does it for me. I have a hard time believing someone would manage to put a working Pinball machine together using only Lego, but it’s a pretty cool (and brave) idea!

    Lego Pinball Machine

Special mention to the USB stick is well deserved! I mean, if you’re going to lug a USB key around, might as well make it interesting and unusual! πŸ™‚

  • If Microsoft designed the iPod

Or “Why you should keep marketing away from your designs”. One of the best parodies I’ve seen in months!

[Edit: Changed the YouTube link as previous was broken. Do a search for “Microsoft iPod” if it breaks again]

  • A word of advice

I know a reasonable number of OS X users are reading this, so a word of advice to all.

While we’re relatively safe from viruses, trojans and the likes, all sorts of attempts at infecting Macs are starting to appear in the landscape. I’d like to believe that the average Mac user is switched on enough to spot odd files being offered, and to not require Norton and MacAfee’s “nannying”. All it means is that you should be careful, think about whether you’re expecting to receive the file in question before opening it.

Bill is right, don’t be too smug. And “Of course, Apple Mac OS X users need to be careful running unknown or unsolicited code on their computers. Duh.”, says MacDaily.

  • Google does Widgets in its 20% time

It’s a known fact that all Google engineers get to dedicate 20% of their work time to a pet project. Jonathan Berger, from the Mac Applications team, notifies us of three funky widgets created by the Google team.

    Google Mail Widget

One for the Blogger users, allowing you to post from the Dashboard (pah! WordPress has done that for yonks!), one to check your Gmail, and one to dig back into your search history.

As the sarcastic Digg populace stated, “It’s a good day to be a Google and Apple fanboy” (or fangirl).

  • Still alive

Just barely, but dropping by to say I’ve got 4 good posts in the pipeline but I haven’t had the time to write them… Insaaaane week so far, including two days of training, which means today I’ve got to make up for those two and catch up on all the rubbish I’ve got in my inbox!

  • Just a passing thought…

A few acquaintances and friends have announced recently that they’re pregnant. I always oooh and awww because a new life is always amazing, and babies grow so fast, it’s unbelievable. (Plus, when they grow up, they come out with real gems, Leta’s babbling, Lilly’s “Good idea!”, or me, age 3, singing “Au pays de Candy” while on the potty (not a chance you’ll ever get a hold of THAT clip!)

But when thinking about it… That’s nine months without drinking a drop of booze. Nine months without rare steak, without raw fish (byebye sushi), no recipes containing raw eggs (forget eating cake batter then), no goat’s cheese (granted I think I’m allergic to it, it makes my tummy and skin crawl a couple of hours after I eat it, sure fire!), no brie, no other soft cheeses because they contain a bacteria called Listeria, as I found out from my dear Canadian Domestic Goddess.

The list of things one cannot eat while pregnant goes on forever, but most of all, no wine? No gorgeous cold crisp white wine on a Friday night, when you feel the week lasted a million years and you can’t believe you resisted strangling that coworker at the end of that two hour meeting???

So I raise a glass to all the ladies who have the courage to have babies! Not a streak of motherly urge in this girl, I’ll leave it to the rest of ’em for now!

  • Let's play Pictionary!

Remember when I was complaining about being unable to read Yahoo Mail’s verification image a few weeks ago?

Looks like I’m not alone getting frustrated with this trend of adding Captchas to every booking form you fill in or comment you want to leave on someone’s blog. Seth finds himself fighting with the Ticketmaster site, trying to guess their awful captcha!

    Captcha!

How user-unfriendly can a site get? Keeping in mind that sites like these have as main goal to take bookings. This type of mindboggling image can’t be helping their conversion and would be enough to convince me to book my tickets elsewhere, if possible.

Michael, from figby.com, also points out an idiotic registration captcha. “If you want users to sign up, please don’t use a CAPTCHA system in your site unless it’s really easy for ordinary people to read without pulling the graphic into Photoshop for sharpening and enlargement. If you don’t want users to sign up, you could just remove the registration page rather than torturing people with one of these MENSA-level CAPTCHAs.”
