  • American Political Correctness gone mad!

    Spice Girls
I’m not sure whether to call this political correctness or a frightening attempt at sheltering children from reality, but it’s completely bonkers!

Five girls were suspended from school and banned from going to their Grade 8 graduation, all because they sang “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls during a school show. So what’s particularly offensive about that song? (The only crime being commited here is the Spice Girls wearing platform shoes)

The issue is over one word that the principal thought inappropriate: “lover.”

The parents say the lyrics are, at best, G-rated bubble gum. Now, what they want, what they really-really want, is for the school to allow the girls to go to their class party. “To take away their eighth grade celebration, which is one of their few socials they’ve had in the three years that she’s been there, I thought that was very harsh,” Lowe said.

School officials say the girls were told to change the lyrics, but the kids say that’s not true, and that it shouldn’t be a crime for nice girls to sing The Spice Girls.

Yes, you read that correctly, the word “lover” was the issue. Five A-grade students singing a little pop song get BANNED from their school grad! I’ve got nothing to do with the situation, but it absolutely infuriates me that a school principal can waste time dealing with that kind of situation when the school is most likely facing some much more serious problems, whether with violence, bullying, obesity or poverty.

The USA is one fucked up place.*

[* If they ban kids from school for singing “lover”, I wonder if I’ll get the death penalty for saying fuck? Oh no, I said it again!]

  • Funny Google Searches – Part VII

Every few months, I like to post some of the most unusual and bizarre Google searches that have landed people on my site. It’s a good laugh so I thought I’d share it.

    • “turkey twizzlers nutritional breakdown” – 95% fat, 5% gristle, hope that helps you!
    • “how do i get rid of love handles if i m a girl without a gym” – You eat less turkey twizzlers!
    • “fat kid strikes again” – The Obese People’s Union Walks Out Over Turkey Twizzlers Ban (But Are Too Lazy to Protest)
    • “bosom exam photos” – Whatever fancy name you give your search, you’re still just looking for tits!
    • “husband corset glue wig” – Whatever your husband does behind closed doors to liven up your marriage, I don’t want to know!
    • “the most beautifull ladyboy” – See above
    • “healthiest option take away curry” – Honey, it’s curry, the only healthy option is not to eat it
    • “bovered definition” – Look at mah face…
    • “canadian girls with mobile phone number” – Not for you, mate!
    • “chipirones mail order” – Sorry but I don’t get the logistics of this one!
    • “pictures of anastacia and her dog freak” – Don’t they say owners pick their pets to their own image?

    • “picture of a family waiting for a school bus” – Ok this one’s just odd…

And now, this week’s challenge. You make up the comment for this last one:

    • “how to make a french canadian girl happy” – Your comment here
  • Eau de Play-Doh

Eau de Play-DohPlay-Doh has a very unique scent, which we associate to so many childhood memories. To me, it’s a reminder of the salty homemade “pâte à modeler” my mom used to make instead of buying us Play-Doh. It did mean I could choose the colour of it and put the drops of food colouring into the mix myself, but it was slightly less cool than real Play-Doh.

And it reminds me of the similar smell of wax crayons, and doing the messiest artwork in the world where you fill the page with colours, cover everything with black, then use the edge of a coin to scrape off the black layer and draw a picture in negative.

Well, for those who also like the smell of Play-Doh and the memories it brings back, Demeter Fragrance Library has released a “Eau de Play-Doh” scent to celebrate Hasbro’s 50 years of Play-Doh. Hasbro says that it’s a fragrance for ‘highly-creative people, who seek a whimsical scent reminiscent of their childhood.’ Mmm I could do with a dose of free and careless childhood right about now.

Fifty years on, Play-Doh is apparently available in 50 colours now! I recall some primary, yet neon, reds, blues, yellows and greens in my childhood, but 50 colours is impressive. Enough to create a grand masterpiece!

  • Saturday: Eurovision Song Contest

This Saturday will be the 51st Eurovision Song Contest, held in Athens, Greece.

It’s a unique event for so many reasons, but mainly, it’s the one time of the year where each country agrees to making a complete fool of itself for the sake of “music”.

While Terry Wogan’s classic commentary makes the event slightly less painful, I suggest a drinking game. Let me know if you choose to tune in to the embarrassment that is the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night!

  • Punt, punt, punt your boat…

I’m not sure I mentioned before that one of my three lovely sisters was coming to England for 3 1/2 months this summer, hoping to get a job in Cambridge and enjoy a different lifestyle for a summer.

I can proudly announce that within less than a week of arriving to the UK, she’s officially working for Scudamore’s Punting Company. She hasn’t yet fallen into the river, and only crashes minimally into other punts, so it can only get better from here!

So if you’re in Cambridge sometime soon and fancy getting the full guided tour, pick her as your guide and be sure to tip her over.

  • There are bad drivers, and then there are BAD drivers!

This afternoon, while walking around Cambridge, I saw an impressive bit of driving.

Cambridge is filled with rising bollards, allowing only tagged vehicles (usually buses, taxis and emergency vehicles) to lower and cross the bollard. The unfortunate driver of this tractor-towing supposed-offroader was a bit of an idiot not to notice that he didn’t have the required tag, causing the road to be closed for the afternoon.

    Car driving over bollard

Just click on the image to see the full-size version and savour the damage and ridicule of the situation. Even the policemen nearby were drinking tea and sniggering at the idiocy of the driver. They didn’t even seem to mind me (and many others) taking photos with our camera phones!

Moral of the story is that the roads are full of clueless people. Me not driving makes one less of ’em! … I mean, Cambridge is a dangerous place to cycle OR drive!

[Update 16/05/06 11:30am: Cambridge News have announced that the driver of the vehicle, a man, aged 55, died after being taken to hospital for his injuries following this crash. True shame that a moment of distraction may have led to the death of the driver.]

  • Google Trends

The Google Labs area is always bubbling away with new ideas and great, or sometimes not so great, tools. (Nothing wrong with “not so great” tools, what benchmark for greatness would we have without average tools to compare them to?)

So this morning, Google Trends caught my attention when Matt Cutts blogged about it. As one would guess from the name, Trends tracks popular search trends, labelling spikes with news articles that were published in that period.

I thought I’d have a look at the seemingly ever-growing online trends that are blogging, podcasting and wikis. This is the result:

Google Trends on blogs, podcasts and wikis

Conclusion #1: Podcasts came to the limelight in 2005, but don’t even come up to the ankle of the great blogging phenomenon. I’m pleased to see the ongoing growth of wikis, as they’re a valuable source of information.

Conclusion #2: There are so many random topics one can search on Google Trends, it’s possible to lose a couple of hours without knowing it! Steve posted 25, Matt’s readers add a few more.

  • Best wishes!

This weekend, I visited for the first time a part of the country I hadn’t yet seen – The Malvern Hills (somewhere between Worcester and Hereford). Such beautiful countryside, and the weather held up all weekend.

Reason for such travel was our friends Claire & Adrian’s wedding, which was an absolute success in every way, with neither bride or groom attempting to run away from the ceremony 😉

Aren’t they looking happy and gorgeous? Best wishes to the happy couple!

  • Lost in translation…

This 4* hotel minibar leaflet is the perfect example of why one should never skimp on translators for things, as the impression left on customers will be a lasting one. It looks terribly unprofessional and leaves visitors wondering where else you may have tried to cut corners, rather than do things properly.

This will only really be amusing to the French-speaking readers, sorry to the French-impaired ones…

Talking about bad translations… Why not go visit good ol’ Engrish? Hours of easy entertainment!
