I used to go on to my coworkers about my great advertising ideas, a few of which involved paint, oversized ads and Google Earth (usually after a few pints, they seemed GREAT!)
But it looks like Maxim magasine has beat me to it by plastering its latest magasine cover in a 75×100 foot poster in the middle of the desert.
I started the list wanting to post 10 items, but I can only think of four. What new useless facts have you learned recently?

I’ve had the same old phone for a couple of years, the Nokia 6100, a simple but sort of featureless little phone. It did me well, but I desperately wanted a camera phone as a way to spice this blog up a bit (and to quiet my mom down about not sending enough photos home 😉 ).
So I treated myself to a Nokia N70 (warning, god awful minisite, just go look at the specs), as it had the 2 megapixels camera I wanted and plenty of funky features like Symbian OS, mp3 ringtones and an easy-access upgradable memory card.
I haven’t had a huge amount of time (or sunlight) to try the camera in different lighting conditions but so far so good. It does video as well, but I can’t imagine that’ll come out too well!
Otherwise, it’s also got a highly addictive version of Snakes. Ok, I know most people don’t care, but I’m easily entertained, especially when sitting on the bus to work when it’s either playing mini-games or watching miserable people fall asleep.
At this point in time, the N70 comes highly recommended if anyone’s looking for a new phone! More photos on the way!
It’s a known fact that all Google engineers get to dedicate 20% of their work time to a pet project. Jonathan Berger, from the Mac Applications team, notifies us of three funky widgets created by the Google team.
One for the Blogger users, allowing you to post from the Dashboard (pah! WordPress has done that for yonks!), one to check your Gmail, and one to dig back into your search history.
As the sarcastic Digg populace stated, “It’s a good day to be a Google and Apple fanboy” (or fangirl).
If you’re a Gmail user, you’ll know what I’m about to say. (And if you’re not, do yourself a favour and drop me a line so I can send you an invite, Gmail is just great!)
So, as I was saying, another feature in Gmail, another weapon to Google’s arsenal. Google Chat has only been live for the masses for a few days, but it’s already been very popular.
Granted, like any other company, Google fails on some new features or products (Google Base for example?), when it gets it right, it gets it REALLY right. Google Chat is a clean simple limited-features chat client, that can be used from within Gmail, discreet and requiring no special downloaded software. It doesn’t do MSN Messenger’s song and dance, but I think that’s why I like it so much.

The new integrated spam filter for WordPress is absolutely brilliant. In the past few days, it’s picked up nearly 300 spam messages, and since I installed it a few weeks ago, it’s nearly 800 indecent spam messages.
It’s saved me so much box-ticking time, since it picks up 99% of the spam I’ve been getting and WordPress has put the other 1% in moderation. What a wonderful thing spam filters are!
I’m not American. I don’t “get” American football. But most of all, I don’t get the Superbowl hype, or the willingness of American enterprises to blow millions on 30-second adverts every year.
While I do understand that it’s a once-a-year chance to reach a demographic group and hit it hard, it’s still fascinating to see the price paid go up every year. This year, the average cost was $2.5 million per 30 second clip though I’m sure some advertisers paid handsomely more to get the best spots (ie. during the first third when people aren’t getting fidgety yet and taking so many bathroom breaks, food breaks, etc…).
So if like me, you’re only interested in seeing the ad breaks to see whether Americans managed to pull off anything clever this year, you’ll find the ads on Google Video’s Superbowl page. I haven’t watched them yet, so I’ll come back with feedback once I have!
