  • Humpday rant…

No wait, before I start, I’m going to get a coffee…

    * fives minutes later *
    * runs urgent sales report for boss *
    * fifteen minutes later *

Alright, here goes… I need to get a couple of things off my chest.

First off… My wonderfully intelligent little sister Julie had a brain failure a few days ago. She signed herself up for SMS.ac, some stupid service (whether or not it offers the service it claims to at all remains to be discovered) with a thinly disguised purpose. So thinly disguised, it asks you for your hotmail address AND PASSWORD outright!

Unfortunately, Julie had left her brain in her socks drawer that day and put in her password. As a result, everyone in her address book got some spam inviting them to do the same. Odds are, she’s also put her mobile phone number so if the phone in question WAS SMS-enabled, she’d be in for a lifetime of phone spam. I’m not furious about it anymore (who put valium in my latte?!?) but I’m certainly not impressed.

Update (02/12/04): A bit of research tells me the average spam received from sms.ac daily would cost the dingdong who signed up for it a good 3-4$ in received SMS phone spam and jokes from the service. Now if that’s not reason enough not to sign up for it, I don’t know what it! Do NOT sign up for that service, do NOT give your password as it means everyone in your address book gets the same invite message FROM YOU!

*Preacher mode* This is my attempt to reach out to you all, my friends. Use your brain, play safe, don’t send your friends chain letters, hoax warnings or worst crime of all, sign them up for things without their permission. They won’t be your friends anymore.

The internet is full of dirty old men offering you candy to get you in the big white van. You wouldn’t get in their van in real life, so don’t give away your passwords, card numbers or address to spammers online.

Things to do before forwarding emails to your friends or signing them up for crap:

    • Hoax warnings: Check them, they’re probably fake anyways. I’ve come across ONE real warning in about 10 years. Find out on F-Secure, Urban Legends and other similar sites.
    • Forwards: Think for two seconds whether they really care to get a powerpoint animated presentation telling them “Don’t worry, be happy, here’s a photo of Leonardo DiCaprio”. If their IQ is lower than the age of the average Leo fan, then send away. Otherwise, please don’t, FFS! It only results in your email address being passed on to thousands of people down the list, and spambots picking up on it.
    • “Send this to your friend”: Copy/paste the URL yourself if you think they’ll be so interested and email that, rather than putting their address in and signing them up for trashmail.
    • Sites that ask for your password: Now, if you can’t figure out that it’s bad to enter your password on a third party site, right this way for the frontal lobotomy with a rusty spoon. You’ve deserved it.

I’m an angry old hag? Yah I know. Thanks.

Update (02/12/04) “My wonderfully intelligent little sister Julie had a brain failure a few days ago.” This isn’t sarcastic, I do mean it when I say she’s smart. She just did something silly that day, hence calling it a brain failure. Julie, prend pas Γ§a personnel! Penses-y juste deux fois la prochaine fois! πŸ˜‰ xoxo VΓ©ro

  • Breaking news

    Ahoy, ahoy!

I’d just like to point out that I am currently surfing the Interweb while sitting in my pyjamas in bed! Not a single cable in sight, we are now equipped with wireless at home and the laptop battery seems to last well… at least an hour and a half…

So having a look at the neighbourhood, there are a few other wireless networks in the area… heehee let’s see who’s too technology illiterate and hasn’t set a password on the network… *geeks around*

Otherwise, it’s a slow day for Vero News. I’ll be back tomorrow with some thrilling things to share I’m sure…

  • Buahaha I love my stats

In the control panel for this website, I can see what search results landed people on my website, as I’ve explained before.

This morning, I had a peek, and this result made me laugh out loud! “what can i do on the sims 2 and can i have sex on it and produce babies”

Hahaha! Who formulates Google questions like that?

Alright, this gave me a bit of a giggle, now back to work…

  • Crisps and exercise?

Isn’t that a bit of a funny marriage? Crisps make you fat, yet we’ll give you a walk-o-meter and try to get you to associate our brand to fitness!

Let me explain… Walkers Crisps (part of the same family as Lays’ Chips in North America, as far as I understand) are giving away Walk-o-meters for the past few months. We received ours on Thursday, so I wore it to work and started getting annoyed at how this (free) gadget wasn’t working properly.

Result: Andrew took it apart, inspired by this Walk-O-Meter autopsy I found on someone else’s blog. It worked ever so slightly better afterwards but still lost its charm after a few… minutes…

So it was an interesting idea, but I wonder how many people will use it for more than a day. It certainly makespeople discuss the gadget between the time they order it and receive it. Also, no matter how useless the gadget is, I bet it’ll sit on a lot of coffee tables and shelves for a long time, proudly displaying the Walkers logo, before someone actually throws out the free gadget.

In the meantime, I’ll just enjoy their ad campaigns, they’ve always got cute ideas… Poppadom poppadom dom dom!

  • Photos of Lisa's kitties

Some photos from our weekend in Brighton… As you can see, it was all about the kittens! But as we have a new camera now, we can take a whole lot more photos, and I’ll post them all! πŸ™‚

  • Why blogging is good for you

I’ve been meaning to write this for a while, but interestingly, through Darren, I found 10 reasons to blog.

To me, blogging isn’t about changing the world or yelling out a political opinion. It’s about organizing my thoughts and ideas so they make sense to myself, first and foremost. The fact that family and friends use it to keep track of what the little girl who moved to England is doing is the second most important element. Then there’s that oddly satisfying thought that complete strangers are coming across my blog through that web of bloggers who’ve linked to each other.

If only you knew what you might find: Reading about other people’s lifes and interest got me to expand my horizons and discover new things.

As Marie-Chantale says, by clicking on the favourite links of bloggers you read, you discover new things. I’ve read tons about advertising and marketing through blogs, seen some of the most interesting opinions on new technologies, and god only knows I’ve found out about new music, new cities and new people! Who said being techy and having a blog had to be geeky and anti-social?!

To some, blogging might not appear to have much of a purpose, but to me, it’s like sending a letter or calling my family and friends, letting them know even though I’m far away. Loin des yeux, loin du coeur? Who said it had to be so?

So go on, start writing and let me know, I’ll read you everyday πŸ™‚

  • Designer Meow

Now this is a scary cat. It’s a cat that won’t make you sneeze, no matter how strong your allergies to kitties are! You can “buy” a kitten now, even though it won’t be available until 2007.

They rely on cloning to produce the perfect hypoallergenic cat. And we thought The 6th Day was being unrealistic hmm? (Before you give me a frontal lobotomy for mentioning that movie, NO, I don’t think it’s any good, it’s just the first cloning movie I can think of… Ya know, when Schwartzie sees ads to clone dead pets? It’s the only bit of the movie I saw, really!)

It makes me feel a bit uneasy to know we’re developing designer beings, whether they’re cats or human babies, it seems to be one huge mistake. Would you buy a designer kitty?

Interesting, Andrea blogged about this as well today!

  • The 1970s Failure

After singing the praises of the concept of the 1970s Office, I shake my head and wonder why it developed the way it did. It was torn between an almost-documentary-on-advertising show and a reality tv rubbishy piece, and unfortunately, it went the reality tv way.

Joe, the office boy, is a plant, put there to annoy the living hell out of the real advertisers. The campaigns aren’t developing into anything worthy of the real world, and overall, the show isn’t turning into what anyone expected. I hoped to see in depth how campaigns were developed, while the general public probably hoped for a retro Big Brother…

Ah well, new show concepts can’t all succeed!

  • I found my groove

You know that feeling of being overwhelmed by work, of not even vaguely understanding what you’re meant to do with the 15 spreadsheets that have just been emailed over? When the last email from a colleague might as well be written in hieroglyphics, as it would probably make more sense?

Last night, I even had nightmares about work! I haven’t really had nightmares about work/school since early high school when I was dreading sight-reading music tests in front of the class. I guess part of why my subconscious is acting up is that the girl I am currently replacing while she’s on maternity leave is coming to visit work Friday, and returning to the office in a few weeks. No, I won’t suddenly be job-less but it still shook me a bit to know soon the big decision of what permanent position I get will happen.

Tadaaaaah So this morning, we got the good news that a big and unrealistic project had been postponed to late January, after our sales conference. My coworker was so excited, he started singing “Joy to the world!” Then, like a message from the Gods, I suddenly felt illuminated and understood what I had to do on another project.

Now I’m sitting here with my cup-a-soup, feeling way better than when I walked into the office this morning. I’m still nearly drowning under spreadsheets and odd queries, but I’ll battle them and win!
